TOKYO (Reuters) - Shares, oil and other riskier assets slumped on Monday after elections in Greece and France saw incumbents defeated, raising fears the collective response to the euro zone debt crisis seen as crucial to holding the currency bloc together is fracturing.

MSCI's broadest index of Asia-Pacific shares outside Japan <.miapj0000pus> slid 2.3 percent to a three-month low, on course for its worst daily fall in five months, with the materials sector <.miapjmt00pus> and growth-sensitive sectors such as technology <.miapjit00pus> leading the declines.

European shares will likely sink at the open, with financial spreadbetters predicting that major European markets <.fchi><.gdaxi> would open down over 2 percent. U.S. stock futures were down 1 percent. <.eu><.l><.n/>

The results threatened the fragile political consensus that has kept Europe's currency bloc intact through more than two years of crisis and raised pressure on Germany to take a more growth-oriented approach to the crisis.

"There are great fears that the new government in Greece will end austerity measures and that will lead to a disorderly default, and that has led to a sell-off across all risk markets," said Ben Le Brun, a market analyst with OptionsXpress in Sydney.

The outcome of the Greek election was having a much bigger impact than French election result, market players said.

Greece's two main pro-bailout parties failed to win a majority in parliament that would allow them to form a coalition, putting at risk the policies that have shielded Athens from bankruptcy and a euro exit.

"The issue is that in Greece the outcome raises the level of uncertainty a lot, because it's not clear who can form the government or in fact how long they will last, and what their attitude to the current agreements that the Greek government had reached would be," said Richard Yetsenga, Head of Global Markets at ANZ Research.

"The French outcome was as expected. The markets have already shifted to a view that austerity on its own wasn't the right policy mix and that other things needed to be considered."

In France, Socialist Francois Hollande swept to presidential election victory, ousting incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy who had played a key role in structuring bailout schemes for indebted euro zone members and pushed for strict fiscal policies aimed at managing huge debts, working closely with German Chancellor Angela Merkel.

Amid skepticism that a similar tie could be forged, Merkel invited Hollande to visit Berlin as soon he could for a meeting that would set the groundwork for a consensus on growth policies vital to the euro zone's future health.

"Austerity will not work to solve Europe's debt crisis. However, shifting austerity to higher earners and business will accelerate the debt crisis," said Jeff Sica, president of SICA Wealth Management, which manages more than $1 billion in client assets, real estate and private equity holdings.

"The Merkel/Hollande initiative will never materialize due to Hollande and Merkel being polar opposites with no chance to agree on anything," Sica said.

US DATA DENTS SENTIMENT

Much weaker-than-expected U.S. jobs data on Friday added to concerns, as it raised the biggest question mark yet about the prospects of growth in the world's largest economy.

Mitsuru Sahara, chief FX manager at Bank of Tokyo Mitsubishi-UFJ in Tokyo, said the euro would remain pressured due to a bearish technical outlook, possibly moving towards the year-low near $1.26, while waning optimism about the U.S. economy could further weigh on investors' risk appetite.

"Markets have been rallying so far this year on expectations about the solid U.S. economy, and if such views falter, it could snap uptrends in markets," he said, adding that a series of speeches scheduled this week by Federal Reserve officials may shed light on the Fed's latest view about U.S. growth.

Chinese data due later this week, including trade balance figures, consumer prices and industrial output, was also in focus. Weaker data from the world's second-largest economy could underscore how vulnerable the global growth outlook is and further dent investor risk appetite.

Wall Street posted its biggest weekly fall this year after U.S. jobs data showed 115,000 workers were hired in April, well below forecasts of 170,000.

RISK OFF, SAFETY ON

U.S. crude futures dropped more than $3 a barrel while Brent crude fell more than $2.50 after the election results and U.S. jobs data. U.S. crude was last down 1.5 percent at $97.04 while Brent was down 0.7 percent at $112.42.

The Australian dollar, sensitive to commodities demand and hence growth expectations, fell to a four-month low near $1.0110 on Monday while the euro fell to its lowest since January 25 at $1.2955.

Risk aversion hit Asian credit markets, pushing the spread on the iTraxx Asia ex-Japan investment-grade index wider by 11 basis points, but safe-haven assets such as government debt and the yen rose.

The yen's strength hit Japanese exporters, which along with financials, sent the Nikkei stock average <.n225> tanking as much as 2.9 percent to a three-month low. <.t/>

The dollar eased 0.2 percent at 79.77 yen, after the yen firmed against the euro to its highest level since mid-February at 103.24 yen.

The yield on the benchmark 10-year Japanese government bond slipped to 0.865 percent, its lowest level since October 2010, while 10-year Treasury yields slumped to 1.83 percent from 1.88 percent on Friday.

The dollar rose against a basket of major currencies <.dxy> to a three-week high, making dollar-priced commodities less attractive to buyers holding other currencies and weighing on spot gold which fell 0.3 percent to $1,637.56 an ounce.

Rare glimpse of world's rarest gorilla

ScienceDaily (May 8, 2012) ? Conservationists working in Cameroon's Kagwene Gorilla Sanctuary have collected the first camera trap video footage of the Cross River gorilla. With fewer than 250 individuals remaining, Cross River gorillas are the world's rarest gorilla and a notoriously elusive species rarely observed directly by field researchers.

Collected from one of four video camera traps set up by researchers in the protected area, the footage reveals eight Cross River gorillas casually making their way along a forest path.

"This video gives us all a spectacular view into the hidden world of one of our closest relatives, which is in dire need of our help to survive," said Steve Sanderson, WCS President and CEO.

Christopher Jameson, Director of WCS's Takamanda Mone Landscape Project, added: "The video represents the best images to date of Cross River gorillas, normally shy animals that flee at the slightest hint of human presence. The footage provides us with our first tantalizing glimpses of Cross River gorillas behaving normally in their environment. A person can study these animals for years and never even catch a glimpse of the gorillas, much less see anything like this."

Running at almost two minutes in length, the video begins with the entry of one gorilla, which sits at the base of a tree while others emerge from the dense forest. At one point, a male silverback appears, surveying the area (and perhaps aware of the camera) before running past the camera lens giving a classic "chest-beating" display. Another gorilla (appearing in the footage at around 1:18 in the sequence) appears to be missing a hand, a healed injury but a disquieting indicator of the presence of snares within the family group's range in the past before increased patrolling in the now-protected area.

"Cross River gorillas occur in very low densities across their entire range, so the appearance of a possible snare injury is a reminder that continued law enforcement efforts are needed to prevent further injuries to gorillas in the sanctuary," said Dr. Liz Macfie, Gorilla Coordinator for WCS's Species Program.

The Kagwene Gorilla Sanctuary was established by the government of Cameroon in 2008 for the sole purpose of protecting the Cross River gorilla and evolved out of the "Gorilla Guardian" community network, created by WCS to improve gorilla survival prospects in the most vulnerable unprotected forest sites in Cameroon. The sanctuary is now managed by a conservator (chief warden) assisted by two ecoguards, all appointed by the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife (MINFOF), and a strong team of local staff from the eight villages near the protected area. Kagwene is the only site where daily monitoring of Cross River gorilla movements takes place.

"Spectacular footage such as this, which we've never had before for Cross River gorillas, is absolutely vital to inspire local people, the governments of Nigeria and Cameroon, and the global community to care about and to save this unique subspecies," said Dr. James Deutsch, Executive Director for WCS's Africa Program. "Continued research of this kind will help fine-tune management plans to protect this rarest of apes."

The Cross River gorilla is the rarest of the four subspecies of gorilla, with fewer than 250 individuals remaining across its entire range, limited to the remote forested mountainous terrain on the border region of Nigeria and Cameroon. The subspecies is listed as "Critically Endangered" and is threatened by both habitat destruction and hunting, as the entire population lives in a region of high human population density and heavy natural resource exploitation. Local community residents in the area surrounding Kagwene do not directly hunt Cross River gorillas due to traditional beliefs, but they do set snares for other forest animals, and these could occasionally injure gorillas.

Key support for the creation of the sanctuary was provided by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, which also provided funding for the camera traps and other monitoring equipment. Other support for the project came from: Pro Wildlife; Berggorilla; and World Wide Fund for Nature. In Cameroon, WCS works in cooperation with the Ministry of Forests and Wildlife (MINFOF).

Additional supporters for Cross River gorilla conservation in both Cameroon and Nigeria include: the governments of Cameroon and Nigeria; North Carolina Zoological Society; the Arcus Foundation; KfW (German Development Bank); International Union of the Conservation of Nature's SOS Program; Margot Marsh Biodiversity Foundation; Columbus Zoo and Aquarium; the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) -- Great Apes Survival Partnership; UNEP -- Convention on Migratory Species; The Gorilla Organization; National Geographic Society; Fauna and Flora International; Pandrillus; the Environment and Rural Development Foundation (ERuDeF); Cleveland Zoological Society; Kolmarden Zoo; Taronga Zoo; and World Association of Zoos and Aquaria (WAZA).

PHILADELPHIA (AP) ? Cole Hamels earned a five-game suspension for the way he welcomed Bryce Harper to the big leagues.

The 2008 World Series MVP was suspended for intentionally throwing at the Washington rookie in the Philadelphia Phillies' 9-3 win over the Nationals on Sunday night.

Major League Baseball announced the penalty Monday. Hamels also was fined.

Hamels wasn't available to reporters before the Phillies opened a three-game series against the New York Mets. But he already admitted that he deliberately threw at Harper.

"I was trying to hit him," the two-time All-Star lefty said Sunday night. "I'm not going to deny it. I'm not trying to injure the guy. They're probably not going to like me for it, but I'm not going to say I wasn't trying to do it. I think they understood the message, and they threw it right back. That's the way, and I respect it."

Hamels began serving his suspension Monday night. With Cliff Lee expected to come off the disabled list and start Wednesday, coupled with Thursday's day off, Hamels really won't miss a turn in the rotation.

Roy Halladay will likely pitch on regular rest Saturday and Hamels would then start Sunday against the San Diego Padres.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. was disappointed the incident occurred.

"Obviously that's not what we're about," Amaro said. "We're not about trying to injure people. Things that happen in the game happen in the game. Those are parts of the game. But as far as how the Phillies want to conduct themselves, we try to take the high road on things. By no means are we condoning this. We fully support what the commissioner's office has decided to do."

Hamels plunked Harper in the small of the back with a fastball in the first inning. He said the purpose pitch was his old-school way of welcoming the 19-year-old Nationals phenom to the big leagues.

"That's something I grew up watching, that's kind of what happened. So I'm just trying to continue the old baseball because I think some people are kind of getting away from it," Hamels said. "I remember when I was a rookie the strike zone was really, really small and you didn't say anything because that's the way baseball is.

"But I think unfortunately the league's protecting certain players and making it not that old-school, prestigious way of baseball," Hamels added.

Harper got the last word, though. When Hamels made a pickoff to first, Harper stole home for the first swipe of his eight-game big league career.

In the third inning, Nationals starter Jordan Zimmermann hit Hamels in the left leg with one out and a runner on first when the Phillies pitcher squared to bunt. Home plate umpire Andy Fletcher warned both dugouts.

Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo told The Washington Post that Hamels hitting Harper with a pitch was "classless" and "gutless."

According to the newspaper's website, Rizzo also said: "Cole Hamels says he's old school? He's the polar opposite of old school. He's fake tough. He thinks he's going to intimidate us after hitting our 19-year-old rookie who's eight games into the big leagues? He doesn't know who he's dealing with."

Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he wished Hamels wouldn't have been so forthcoming with his comments.

"He could have been a little more discreet or less honest," Manuel said. "The way I look at it, baseball is going to take care of it between the two teams on the field. To me, that's the issue. When they hit Cole, it set it even. At the same time, the best way to handle the Nationals is to beat them on the field."

As for Rizzo's reaction, Manuel brushed it off.

"I think that if we beat them on the field, that will take care of our business and that takes care of it," Manuel said. "When they hit Hamels, that takes care of it and we're back on even ground. There was no warning or nothing. They had a chance to get even. That even made it a wash. What Rizzo says is no concerns to me."
